Manga magazine Monthly Dragon Age announced the death of illustrator and mangaka Hinata Takeda (武田日向) in its latest June edition. The artist actually passed away in January 2017 due to an illness that was not named.

Takeda’s most notable work is the illustration for GOSICK, a detective light novel series written by Kazuki Sakuraba (桜庭一樹). Takeda had been illustrating for it since the very first volume. GOSICK was made into an anime series in 2011, and it has become popular for its gothic Lolita-like characters.

In fact, Takeda Hinata is renowned for drawing young girls in Lolita style. Her most representative manga series are Croisée in a Foreign Labyrinth and Yaeka no Girl (やえかのカルテ) which are both significant for their Lolita portagonists.

The last of Takeda’s work is an illustration for the DVD box set of GOSICK in 2011. She was already ill and weak during that time and the drawing is said to have "deprived her of all her strength".

Sakuraba commented on Takeda’s work in the announcement, praising her for her charismatic characters and bold yet detailed style. "I started to write based on Takeda’s illustrations since volume two, hoping to write a novel that does not lose to her drawings".

Takeda had always kept her life low profile. Readers and fans can only get to understand this late mysterious artist through her few remaining works.
