[Qoo Review] First Impressions of DC Unchained (CBT)

The Closed Beta for 4:33’s DC Unchained has just ended. The new mobile action game brings together iconic characters from DC Comics, to create a game that gamers can enjoy and DC fans can appreciate.

In terms of gameplay, the game heavily resembles Marvel Future Fight. Players put together teams of three for PvE content and PvP content. The main story is told in two perspectives, from the eyes of DC heroes and from the eyes of the villains. Just like Marvel Future Fight, different team compositions will have different passive effects. During the CBT, the game was really great to look at. Well-created graphics and a fluid gameplay makes watching Batman taken down multiple enemies with a Batarang or a series of quick-yet-deadly strikes incredibly satisfying for DC fans.

Unfortunately, similar to Marvel Future Fight, their game doesn’t offer a huge incentive for players to turn off autoplay. Sure, stages becoming more and more challenging as players progress, but rather than turning off auto to clear the stage manually, as a player, I would rather go back to a previous stage and just watch the characters farm stages for exp and progress through the story when characters are stronger.

A feature I enjoyed more about DC Unchained than Marvel Future Fight is that character skins are more like a transformation rather than a completely different standalone character. What this ultimately suggests is that although getting character skins will give players a new set of powerful skills, all players will still benefit from powering up their favorite heroes. For casual gamers and DC fans who just want to experience the DC comic book world on their phones, they won’t be severely underpowered if they don’t buy new skins.

What makes DC Unchained such a great game for DC comic fans is the character design and character animations. With the exception of a handful of characters (i.e Superman), most characters are created with their comic book appearance as a base. Each movement brings out the essence of the character as in the DC’s incredibly successful animation series and movies.

Looking at just the game itself, there really isn’t much that DC Unchain offers better than other game’s, but the game perfectly creates a DC universe that some of the previous DC games didn’t. Players can really immerse themselves in a familiar DC story with some of the most iconic comic book heroes that were created revolving around their comic book counterparts, and that is the true selling point of the game. As a DC fan, that makes the game appealing and stand out from other action games.
