Magikarp Jump, the latest mobile Pokemon game can be considered a very different aspect of the franchise. The game places players once again as a Pokemon trainer, but more specifically, a Magikarp trainer.

The goal of the game is to raise a Magikarp with the most Jump Power (JP). Essentially, the game runs like a tap-idle game. Players simply train their Magikarp up to its max level and go as far as they can in the "League".

The League is the equivalent of stages in typical tap-idle games. Each stage, the player’s Magikarp competes to with another trainer’s Magikarp to see which can jump higher.

Once your Magikarp reaches max level, you will be forced to progress the league until you lose. When you do eventually lose, your current Pokemon retires and you can fish a new generation.

Each time a generation retires players will receive permanent buffs to make training your new Magikarp much easier.

Asides from tapping berries which are generated over time, most of the game is just watching Magikarp do its thing.

But at the end of the day, it is still a Pokemon game and the most important part of any Pokemon game is to Catch’em All! Magikarp Jump is no different. Although Magikarp is the only Pokemon you catch, the game features a variety of different Magikarp patterns for players to collect in their "Pattern Dex".

Overall Thoughts

The game is quite unique for a Pokemon game and is quite fun initially. Magikarp has always been a controversial Pokemon, and a game that features Magikarp exclusively is surely something Pokemon fans can enjoy.

Unfortunately, the game suffers the same problems with most tap-idle games. After a few generations, the game runs out of new things to offer players. Sure, the raising Magikarps and and filling a "Pattern Dex" can be entertaining, but they’re not significant features that makes you want to continue playing the game.

So to conclude, overall, the game is fun initially, but quickly deteriorates into another pointless time waster.
